Executive Director

Before joining TVET UK at its launch in 2007, Alan was working at UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in a number of consultative and business development roles, including advising on international market entry strategy. He became a recognised expert in international educational equipment supply and skills development and was appointed to the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur to identify and advance education and training opportunities for the UK across Malaysia. Following this attachment, Alan became the Regional International Trade Adviser specialising on Education & Training in the North East of England, and then International Business Specialist for UKTI’s Education and Skills sector team in London.

Alan started working life as an instrumentation technician apprentice at ICI Petro-chemicals plant on Teesside. Following that he worked as a senior instrumentation technician on North Tees Oil refinery, a lecturer in Industrial Measurement and Control and headed up a team of Control and Instrumentation designers on the Sizewell ‘B’ nuclear power station project. Alan spent his first spell overseas on a two year contract at Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery in Saudi Arabia. Alan returned to the UK to become Training and Quality Manager for a local engineering company. This work also took him overseas to deliver training courses and seminars and to undertake feasibility studies throughout the Middle East for major oil and gas companies. He then became Head of International Operations at a college of Further Education, where he was involved with international student recruitment, setting up skills development training contract with national industries and corporate organisations, managing European Union projects and developing quality assurance partnerships with international institutions in Malaysia and India.

Alan has the perfect mix of experience for his current role as Executive Director of TVET UK and to date has been the driving force in successfully delivering a number of lucrative projects for members and clients. He has established fruitful partnerships with ministry departments around the world including in Libya, China, India, Malaysia, Egypt and Nigeria.

Executive Director

Matt joined TVET UK at its launch in 2007 and his main role is to develop new markets for the UK vocational sector, specifically TVET UK members. He has led trade missions to emerging markets for UK vocational education such as Azerbaijan, Burma, Kazakhstan and Algeria as well as more established markets like Saudi Arabia, looking to match customer requirements to the best that the UK TVET sector can offer. He has put together consortia to carry out major projects in these markets.

Matt has spoken in support of prioritising vocational education and training at conferences and events across the world, and had also been asked to write numerous articles in support of the vocational education agenda.

Matt worked for 11 years in the City & Guilds group in various marketing and business development roles including International Development Manager for a range of bespoke vocational products for clients in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. He left City & Guilds in 2006 to work as a freelance marketing and business development consultant specialising in vocational education, working with a number of FE colleges on projects and interim management roles.
