TVET UK's recent trade mission to Algeria has generated a number of leads and it is hoped that an MOU will be signed within the next few weeks.

TVET UK members are hoping to satisfy Algeria’s growing appetite for UK education and training– particularly in English language and youth employability. Executive Director, Matthew Anderson, first spotted the potential of the country on a ground-breaking scoping mission in late 2010 and, following intensive planning and preparation, led the first educational trade delegation to the country in early January.

Algeria has moved into a time of peace following French occupation and civil war, and has used the significant wealth gained from its oil and gas to invest in its infrastructure. It is now planning to become a major player in the global market, and is looking to its youth to lead the way.  The government is particularly interested in developing their English language and employability and entrepreneurship skills, as well as high quality specialist skills in accountancy, tourism and hospitality, and oil and gas engineering.  They are also looking for state-of-the art equipment and supplies to support this initiative.

The recent TVET UK mission included representatives from colleges, equipment suppliers, awarding body, employability programmes and financial services who met with key decision makers from ministries, the national oil company (Sonotrach) and other corporates.  They also held a conference which attracted significant media interest.

Returning delegates are very happy with the leads generated, and it is hoped that an inward delegation visiting within the next few weeks will sign an official MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).  Members will be emailed with more details as soon as they are available.
