Castle College Nottingham – enhancing skills at its English Language Teachers International Summer School
Building on its significant experience of devising courses for international students, Castle College Nottingham has successfully introduced an annual month-long teacher training programme. Held every summer, the course is designed to enhance the pedagogical skills of international English teachers, teaching them the very latest English language teaching techniques. The programme also seeks to improve participants’ English and provide a useful introduction to British culture and society. There are free excursions to city and cultural attractions throughout the UK, as well as visits to local universities, colleges and schools.
The course first took place in 2005 at the request of the Chinese Nanchang University in Jiangxi Province. 40 teachers and English language students came to Nottingham to take the course. It was so successful that 82 participants arrived in 2006. The programme has now been extended to include IELTS training and general English courses, as well options in specialist vocational areas, and attracts over 200 participants including teachers and students from Chinese universities, middle and elementary school teachers from Korea, and teachers from Hong Kong, Vietnam and Japan.
