A Largely Untapped Opportunity for UK Business

Francophone Africa — and selected Francophone markets beyond the continent — represents a significant, largely untapped opportunity for UK business. These are markets where UK organisations are genuinely welcome, where competition is lower, and where the absence of traditional bilateral relations with Britain is seen not as a barrier but as an open door.

FBBC is not a conventional bilateral chamber. We are relationship-led and project-based, working selectively across under-served and emerging Francophone markets where we have networks, experience and the contacts to open doors that would otherwise take years to reach independently. FBBC leadership has spent more than 15 years developing commercial and institutional relationships across Francophone Africa — that depth of presence is what we bring to members.

The French post-colonial legacy left many of these countries with coherent legal frameworks and a common currency in the CFA — pegged to the Euro and guaranteed by the French treasury — which means that a model that works in one country can often be adapted quickly across several others. Côte d'Ivoire, for example, has been posting some of the fastest sustained GDP growth on the continent, yet remains far less visited by UK business than neighbouring Ghana, leaving real space for organisations prepared to engage on the ground.

The new African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is designed to make international trade easier and more accessible across the continent. FBBC members are well-positioned to take advantage of that opening. We do not offer generic market-entry advice. We open specific doors and stay involved in making things happen.

"After 25 years in international business, including more than 15 years working in Francophone countries, I have seen a real appetite to work with the United Kingdom and to learn English — precisely because these countries do not have traditional relations with Britain, and they see that as an opportunity rather than an obstacle."
